SHS Nurse

Tue Apr 30 09:26am

Thanks to the generous funding from Team Hope, we are excited to welcome our new school nurse, Tanya Jackson, this term. Tanya comes to us with a wealth of experience in primary health and has worked both in New Plymouth and Stratford. With her extensive background in healthcare, Tanya brings a deep understanding of the needs and challenges that our students may face regarding their health and well-being. Her commitment to providing compassionate and comprehensive care makes her an invaluable asset to our school.

Tanya will be available to assist our students with their health needs from Monday to Thursday, between the hours of 9:00 AM and 12:30 PM. Tanya’s office is located in the Clelland Block, where she will be equipped to address a variety of health concerns and provide necessary support to our students. Whether it’s a minor ailment, guidance on healthy living, or simply a listening ear, Tanya is here to help.

Students can make an appointment with Tanya by emailing her at nurse@stratfordhigh.school.nz. If a student requires urgent assistance, they can also drop in to see her during her office hours.

We are confident that Tanya’s presence will greatly benefit our school community, providing timely and professional healthcare support to our students. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us. Thank you for your continued support in ensuring the well-being of our students.

Welcome to Term 2

Thu Apr 25 02:40pm

Kia ora whānau,

Welcome back to Term 2. I hope those who have been working through the school holidays have found some time to connect with your families. The following communication is to provide information on two significant changes for Term 2: appointments available with our school nurse and the laptop loan system.

As was communicated in an earlier newsletter, we are lucky to have had support from Team Hope to allow us to employ a school nurse. Tanya Jackson is a registered nurse, having previously worked with Gerard Radich before he retired and began with us earlier in Term 1. From week 2 of this term, the construction within the nurse’s room will be complete, and student appointments can be made via email at nurse@stratfordhigh.school.nz.

Over the past couple of years, it has become apparent that families can find it difficult to access medical care. The employment of a nurse will allow students to receive timely, free medical care throughout the school day. Our nurse will be available on-site, Monday to Thursday, 9.00am-12.30pm. The role of our nurse is to provide primary health care including assessment, immediate care and referral and support for students. If your child is experiencing pain, discomfort, is concerned about a change within their body or feel they need to see a medical expert, then please encourage them to email for an appointment.

As the world changes, so do the expectations on us as educators. We are in the second year of our Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) and although it has changed the space of the classroom, there are still improvements to be made to enhance the effectiveness of this programme. The continual upskilling of staff to ensure they are confident in the use of digital delivery, upgrade of school owned devices and encouraging students who have a device to bring it to school, all contribute to the effectiveness of a digital environment.

As of Monday, all the school owned laptops will be housed in the library and will be loaned out from this space. There will no longer be computers on wheels around the school. These laptops will now be loaned to students for the day. In term 1, we surveyed our student body to find out who owned a device, and whether they brought this to school. The loan system will only be available to students who do not have a device to bring to school. It will not be available to students who have a device but are choosing to leave these at home. Part of the rationale for this is that we want our students bringing their device to school every day, as this supports the effective delivery of digital sessions within the classroom. Students have less difficulty with their own device and as a result the sessions are more seamless and productive. Students are to collect the loan laptop during form time and must return this between 2.55pm and 3.05pm.

All students who enrol at Stratford High School sign a Cyber Safety User Agreement. By signing the agreement, you acknowledge that you will take care of all devices and ensure that they are used appropriately. If devices are deliberately damaged, or care is not taken with the device, then families may be liable for cost of repair.

We are excited about these two initiatives and the positive impact they will have on our learning environment.

We look forward to seeing you during Term 2.

Regards

Cameron Stone
