Cell Phone Ban

Mon Jan 29 07:44pm

Kia ora everyone,

Before Christmas, and again in mid January, we communicated that cell phones would be banned at Stratford High School from the start of 2024. This was due to the National Government’s 100 day plan to ban phones in school. Last week we received the guidance regarding this ban and what we as schools need to do to ensure we were meeting all of the regulations. The main message received in the guidance is that phones are “away for the day.” This means students cannot have access to their phone at any time. The link below is a video that outlines how we will manage the phone ban. There will be further guidance out tomorrow, including the policy that we are currently having reviewed by New Zealand Schools Trustees Association.

The following information was not included in the video, but it is important to know:
1) If a student has to leave school early for an appointment, they will be able to unlock their pouch at the school office
2) If a student requires an exemption to allow them to use their phone during the school day, this must be made in writing to me with evidence as to why your child requires an exemption. Students who are granted an exemption will receive a card and will be flagged on our student management system. Exemptions may include health reasons (for example, to monitor insulin levels) or a phone is needed to help a student with a disability or learning support need (for example, to assist with impaired communication). Please email sc@stratfordhigh.school.nz to apply for an exemption for your child.

Here is the link to the video (you may need to copy and paste the link into your browser)

Warm regards

Cellphone policy
As was communicated last year, we will be banning cell phones in school from the beginning of 2024. Cell phones will be banned during the school day. We are still waiting on further guidance from the Ministry of Education and will be finalising policy and procedures within the next week. We are committed to ensuring students at Stratford High School are given the very best opportunities to grow socially and academically.

School Lunches
In Term 4 last year we trailled a whanau style delivery from the canteen for our school lunches. Based on the success of the trial, and the increased uptake of the lunches, we will continue this style of delivery in 2024. Students will be served a hot meal each day. With form class moving to the start of the day, we will be serving the lunches at Interval. These will be available to all students and any dietary requirements will be asked for in the coming weeks. Dietary meals will continue to be served as they were in 2023.

School Uniform
Magnum Sports have informed us that they are experiencing a shortage of some of the uniform items, particularly the smaller sizes of the junior polos. More stock is on its way but it would be worthwhile visiting the staff at Magnum Sports in the next few days if you require any uniform. They will be able to inform you of expected due dates of the uniform that you are unable to purchase at the time.
